Fisher also asked Rep. G K Butterfield for help in “getting us out”. Butterfield responded with saying he has a meeting with ElectriCities next week and will discuss debt restructuring.  Butterfield says, “I GET IT!”

  1. I hope the hell they listened to you. We need to the the Utilities Commission in on this and get the f@#$ out of this mess.

  2. We need to go to Washington DC

  3. mmjb says:

f rates go up 50 percent in these eastern cities, we will be ghost towns. We are already 25 percent higher than Progress Energy and we are wasting money on ElectriCities. We will all have to move. Businesses do not want to be here and they sure dont want to come here. We need businesses to support this effort.

  4. ... says:

The NC Utilities Commission analyzes costs for Progress Energy and Duke Energy and we need them doing it for us. Not these council people and power agency people who do not get it. Watch the tape and you will see how slow they are on the issue. We need the expert staff at the Utilities Commission looking over our information .

  5. ... says:

utterly worthless stuff like lawyers inflating their bills with interns that are related to staff, lobbyists inflating their bills for kids of staff and new lobbyists. Not to mention the worthless advertising, communications, economic development and marketing. AND SELL THAT **** HYBRID CAR. STUPID

  6. ... says:

We need to know whether or not this board has 10 lobbyists and who knows how many lawyers working on a bill to get rid of our right to free speech and to question BAD BEHAVIOR. And how much they are spending. Those people should be fired now. And we need to know how much we are paying for

  7. Dean says:

Mr. Fisher did a good job. The Electra Cities people have been lying and hiding expenses for 30 years and we have been and are paying the price. I think Mr. Butterfield can help since his district will wither up and go away if this mess is not eliminated but I think we should have a representative at the meeting. This is the public’s business and the voters have been excluded for far too long.

The debt needs to be restructured but costs also need to be cut. Lobbying costs are absurd. Hiring another lobbying firm is stupid. The Board is inept. Legal costs are probably millions. Worthless ads and websites are worthless. Buying a hybrid car to drive around is worthless. We are becoming ghost towns. Millions could be cut form this place and we could all get a rebate.

Mr. Stribling Bonton of the west gets paid 1500 a month as do his friends and they sit on this board and lord over us and call us whiners. Go ask legislators what he has said about eastern NC. He was with Jessie Tilton and Clay Norris on the mismanagement of our debt. He helped them cover it up and not admit it for almost a year. He should be removed. He has told people this and needs to be asked.

Jean Farmer Butterfield and Ed Jones have been protecting Estherine Davis and her spending. I want to see what she has spent on every legislator. This nonsense about her kid getting hired by lawyers and lobbyists there is absolute criminal. And these lawyers charging us to try to take away our right to write on a blog is crazy and they should be fired. Estherine Davis has been asking people to help her and if she isnt guilty she should say so but I think she is so she is trying to cut off our free speech to protect her lies.

We need an audit by an entity of the Legislature; we need the agencies split; we need Electra Cities eliminated; we need the board eliminated; we need the Utilities Commission to review the costs and regulate the rates cause these city councils and town managers dont know nothing about how to do it; we need experts with the State of NC to take it over because this staff gets paid too much to do what is right. Estherine Davis having her salary doubled with all of these mistakes is suspicious. This is a public place and it needs to be open for inspection.

  8. Rocky Mount resident says:

I think this place should be shut down and our rates taken over by the Utilities Commission. I have never seen so much lying in my life. What makes these people think they can lie to us. How much are they spending on everything?

  9. Kinston says:

George Fisher, in a room full of North Carolina representatives and Congressman G K Butterfield, told the group of lawmakers to resist lobbying efforts of ElectriCities and to work together to get eastern North Carolina out of the debt and high utility rates shackled to our municipalities.

There are 32 cities screwed up by this: Wilson, Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Ayden, Greenville, Lumberton, Red Springs, Clayton, Apex, Wake Forest, Smithfield, Selma, Farmville, Edenton, Elizabeth City, Robersonville, Hobgood, Kinston, La Grange … all of the eastern NC is being screwed up. We are paying very high rates and we will go bankrupt. Mr. Butterfield needs to know that ElectriCities has mismanaged debt, mismanaged refinances and they hide their screw up – it took a year for Jesse Tilton to admit he screwed it up and it cost us, the lobbying costs are out of hand and board members cannot even answer how much it costs. Legal costs are millions and lawyers are milking us dry. The board members have travelled to Seattle, Washington DC, New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, California on our TAB. Sam Nobles has been on this board 11 years. Fred Turnage has been part of it 30 years. They were getting paid. How do you make good decisions when you are wined, dined and paid? The west is still being paid and they are making decisions about our businesses. Mr. butterfield needs to get an independent audit done on this place. It is no different than AIG. He will find that Davis and Norris had their salaries doubled, a former legislator was hired who is out causing trouble and who tried to hurt a city, lobbyists are in cohoots with other lobbyists and hurting cities. Loans and money between Dominion and ElectriCities hurt Elizabeth City and Rocky Mount and Kinston.

  10. Kinston says:

PLEasE ADD TO QUESTIONS: HOW MUCH HAS EACH BOARD MEMBER GOTTEN IN BENEFIT – FOOD, TRIPS, PAY, ALCOHOL . We need to know. Sam NOBLES BEEN ON FOR 11 years – how MANY TRIPS, HOW MANY MEALS, TRIPS, SALRY woulD Be MORE THAN 100,000. FRED TURNAGE 100,000. BRUCE ROSE HOW MUCH. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT THEY GOT SO YOU CAN SEE WHERE THEY ARE LOYAL. WHICH IS NOT To US.
THEY ARE LOYAL TO GETTIN THEIR OWN MONEY and lots of meals and trips. They have short meetings and stay over night before meetings. Western Board members getting paid now – so who they going to support. I do not support Ken Raber or Art Hubert being CEO – they been there too long. I support the State of NC taking over this group by someone accountable to the VOTERS not these people.

    http://www.ncpirg.org/in-the-news/utilities-watchdog-project/utilities-watchdog-project/energy-panel-has-met-once-in-past-6-years-sunday

Hoyle, for example, received $54,400 from political action committees associated with Duke Power, Progress Energy and Electricities since 2002, according to State Board of Election Records. That does not include contributions from executives of those companies or other utility interests.

Also notable: Saunders left his post in the legislature this fall to take a job with Electricities, an umbrella group for the state’s city-owned electric utilities and one of the groups the committee is responsible for overseeing. His current job, Saunders said, entails building up Electricities’ political action committee.

When asked whether citizens should be troubled by his switch in role from oversight chairman to employee of the industry, Saunders said, “I really don’t think so. I really don’t see a conflict there at all. Even being co-chair, I was still a customer of Electricities.”

Saunders said he had a long affiliation with the group, including a stint as mayor of Huntersville, whose residents are Electricities customers.

Still, it’s natural for lawmakers’ connections to donors and employers to raise questions, said Damon Circosta , director of policy for the N.C. Center for Voter Education. He could not speak to the particulars of Saunders’ or Hoyle’s cases but said the public can be skeptical when politicians raise money from those they are supposed to regulate.

“There’s always going to be this perception …

  14. wilson reader says:

The Electricities scam seems to be much like the Madoff scheme. Where is the truth? If Raber is considered for CEO, then citizens need to call the Attorney General or SBI. Too many questions and not enough answers about all of the money business. This debacle needs attention. Business will not come to Wilson with such high rates, why should they?

It also sounds like AIG – big parties, big salary increases, big parties and loss to the consumer.

  15. ... says:

we have lived with Electricities for 30 years and it has NOT WORKED. Does anyone think it has? We need a NEW PLAN. Our agency can move away from ElectriCities and be regulated by the State of NC. This plan has not worked. We need a new one. This one gets worse and the stories of corruption are so bad there is no confidence in it.

  16. ... says:

27,000 customers in Rocky Mount: $1,280,000 / 27,000 = $47.41 rebate per Rocky Mount customer.

Some pay more than others and some have been paying longer so your math is oversimplified

  17. ... says:

$47 is better for everyone than reading about peoples’ kids getting jobs that we pay for, unethical lobbying and lawyering and all the crap we hear about from the cities and legislators. This place is a pit of lies, spin, unethical behavior. I will gladly take $47 to put an end to it.

  18. ... says:

There is likely more than $10m in savings. there are more savings in the power agency budget. We do not even know what they are spending and we get reports of unethical spending and the board does not even know so how do you? Bottom Line. independent audit. State of NC takes over. Utilities Commission analyes, regulates.

  19. ... says:

    Regarding an $8,000,000 rebate.
Rocky Mount’s share of the power agency is 16%. 16% of $8,000,000 is $1,280,000. There are ~ 27,000 customers in Rocky Mount: $1,280,000 / 27,000 = $47.41 rebate per Rocky Mount customer. This is if you could eliminate $8 million in ElectriCities cost!!!

  20. ... says:

On behalf of many of us, I thank you for your diligence in pursuing this issue for so many years. I am white and do not care what color anyone is. We have to work together. I thank Andre Knight for working on this issue and I thank George Fisher, Rick Dew and everyone else. Billie Severini too. THANKS

  21. ... says:

To Bruce – the bill that was passed that the 10 stupid overpaid unethical electricities lobbyists worked on prevents these people from selling electric back to the power agency. How is that for getting your moneys worth. I don’t care what we save off eliminating Electricities. The immediate $10 m in savings can be used to help people.

  22. ... says:

Give me a break. We need about $2 million to manage the eastern agency. We are probably paying $8 million for the western agency. We do not need parties, economic development excursions, communications waste on websites and NC SPIN ads and lack of phone calls and pretty little brochures, lobbyists with potentially criminal behavior and lawyers.

  23. ... says:

I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IS THE REAL BUDGET. THEY ACTUALLY CHARGE TO THE POWER AGENCY FROM ELECTRICITIES. IT IS THEIR MAGIC MATH. AND IT IS A LIE. BUT TO FOLLOW YOUR LOGIC, OK GET RID OF $10M AND GIVE RATEPAYERS A REBATE TO MAKE UP FOR ALL THE LIES, MISTAKES. THEN LET THE STATE TAKE THE POWER AGENCY AND REVIEW THE COSTS AND REGULATE THE COSTS.

  24. ... says:

WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD HAVE THIS DEBT LAST SO LONG AND BE REFINANCED IN SUCH A MALFEASANT MANNER AND SO RECKLESSLY WHILE PAYING OUTRAGEOUS SALARIES AND BONUSES, DOUBLING PEOPLE SALARIES AND SPENDING AT PARTIES AND BEACH TRIPS. THESE BOARD MEMBERS SHOULD RESIGN BECAUSE THEY HAVE PERSONALLY BENEFITTED THROUGH TRIPS, MEALS, PERKS AND PAY.

  25. ... says:

s it that ElectriCities refuses to answer direct questions. That usually means LIES. They have not answered any of the questions put forth. You would think Fred Turnage would answer but we get silence except these stupid quotes. He has complete deniability and hides behind the idiots at Electricities.

You show no remorse or accountability for your bad decisions. To this paper you defended Jessie Tilton even when he lied about refinancing the debt and causing the payments to increase, hiding it from you on the board and us the payers. You are not leading an effort to get rid of expensive lawyers and lobbyists even when they have been exposed as unethical.

Have an independent entity come in and review the place. Like the federal government. At a minimum, the lobbying, communications, economic development, marketing and these idiots they send out to do meetings should be eliminated and we should get a refund for the mistakes that have been made. Why should Estherine Davis get all the benefits for her kid?

  29. ... says:

    A Plan

    03/29/2009 11:33:49 AM

Our plan should be: Demand cuts at ElectriCities and its elimination for wasteful spending that can be a rebate for all the screw-ups. Split the agencies. The west is too different. Let them do what they want to do. Ask the legislature have the Utilities Commission regulate the power agency.

  30. ... says:

Do you get it Ken Raber?

    03/29/2009 10:39:38 AM

Do you people get it at all? I think not. You all are living like you did during high times. We want to see salary cuts, lay offs, stops on stupid spending like lobbyists and lawyers and NC SPIN ads. You got rid of three people and added one and increased a salary of another. You think we are stupid but we are not!

  31. ... says:

    add to the idea

    03/29/2009 10:36:58 AM

Elimination of ElectriCities who have failed. Split the agencies and get the west out of our business. If they think we are whiners, tell them to go run their own agency. Get the Utilities Commission to take over regulation. Get the Legislature to bring in someone to review every single thing at ElectriCities.

  32. ... says:

    Idea

    03/29/2009 10:34:05 AM

Fred T, Ken Raber – here is an idea. You admit this whole system is flawed. You make $5 million in cuts because we don’t need all the super spending at ElectriCities and you demonstrate you understand the economy and you need to cut back like everyone else and quit living the same way. You send a rebate chceck to all your customers to make up for the stupid mistakes..

How much in benefits have these board members been given?

  36. ... says:

    Tilton, Hubert, raber, Turnage

    03/29/2009 10:19:51 AM

and Nobles are probably benefitting. We know ole Estherined Davis is benefitting. When Tilton caused a 2 percent increase on his refinance debacle, he never even said he was SORRY. And we know he is SORRY. We should get a rebate from that and it should come off the back of Huber, Raber, Turnage, Nobles, Davis and the others.

You are doing great against the DEVIL at ElectriCities. They think they can outsmart you but the TRUTH will prevail. Their spending is immoral, at best. The lobbyists and lawyers need to be CUT NOW. Send a rebate after GUTTING ELECTRICITIES. That will make up for SOME of the distress caused by mistakes.
