I just got back from Fike High school, at the invitation of WNCR, to see the set up for tonight’s long anticipated Sheriff’s Debate between Democratic Primary Winner Calvin Woodard and unaffected candidate John Farmer.
The issue here isn’t necessarily what they say, but rather how they say it. For Farmer to be competitive he needs to do the some of the following:
Can Farmer distance himself from the Wayne Gay administration? An administration he’s been a part of and supported for years. Can Farmer quiet the rumors of corruption that have plagued the Wilson Sheriff’s department for as long as I can remember? He simply can’t say, “I don’t know anything about it” as his final answer. He has to address the real issue.
Can Farmer convincingly answer the question of why he is running NOW, as an unaffiliated candidate, given all of the above? After all, Farmer isn’t just running against Woodard, he also running against Gay!
These are the underlining questions Farmer will have to answer, as well as others. And, make no mistake about it, the “invisible” candidate in this race is still Wayne Gay.
Everybody, at least every reasonable voter, will expect both candidates to have some sort of plan to decrease crime in Wilson. Both candidates will site years of law enforcement experience as a reason to vote for them.
But, when the dust settles: the real question becomes who has the credibility to be Wilson County’s next Sheriff.
The debate tonight starts at 7pm on Greenlight Channel 2. It will also be aired on WNCR: Greenlight channel 19 and over the air on channel 41.1 digital.
