Republicans are Struggling for Oxygen.

President Obama quickly came to the defense of UN Ambassador Susan Rice over remarks she made regarding the Benghazi incident during Sunday Moring political talk shows September 16, 2012.

What’s even more interesting is the twists and turns of the Republicans taking aim in a fever pitched effort to discredit Ambassador Rice. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it: to some she’s either a liar or incompetent.

Hilary Clinton was confirmed quickly.  Republicans cited a three part reason for the quick confirmation: instability and violence in  the Middle East, major foreign policies that needed to be addressed and the threat of nuclear weapons in Iran.  Well, what’s changed?   If anything things have gotten worse.  A nuclear Iran is closer by some accounts, Gaza is being flattened in what looks more and more like all out war.  And the threat of an Iranian–Israeli war is inching closer to reality.

The Republicans have gone one step further.  97 Republican House members have signaled President Obama that they will try to block any attempt at a Susan Rice nomination.  There’s just one problem with that: the House doesn’t confirm a Secretary of State—the Senate does the confirming.

So why are the Republicans jockeying for position; what’s the point?  What are they trying to accomplish? Two words: John Kerry.  The Republicans want to ‘stick it to’ Obama; they feel this is as good of an opportunity as any (the last couple of elections haven’t worked out for the Repubs).  If John Kerry becomes Secretary of State then welcome the once junior senator from Massachusetts: Scott Brown.  In other words, the Republicans need Brown—or anyone for that matter in the United States Senate with a “R” at the end of their name.  After all, the senate is a lot more liberal than it was before the election.

But, would the Republicans have done this to Hillary?  Would they have tried to discredit the former senator from New York they way they have to Susan Brown.  No.

The Republicans are in a much different place now.  Republicans  are struggling for oxygen.  They’re in critical condition.  They are out of ideas.  And, that makes them dangerous politically.

What’s worse is that the movers and shakers of the Republican party know that the big money will not come as freely as it did the last time.  The billionaires have been burned and will be skittish.  They think the answer is to make Obama’s political life-and the life of elected Democrats a  two year living Hell.  They started that on November 7th.  At the expense of the American people, the economic recovery? So be it.  After all, didn’t God “call” them?
