Interesting how 40 years can ease the pain of the Nixon Administration. It’s also interesting how 2 years can make others bitter.
Republicans are mulling over who to blame for their plight in the last two elections. Was it ghosts from the past? Or is it a new breed of Republican. A breed that measures the worth of a Republican in terms of RINO: Republican in name only.
Interestingly, Nixon is starting to look good to some Republicans. Republicans who remember the days of old. Some in the GOP are voicing their compassion for Nixon and their distaste for Paul. They point to Nixon in China and his lesser known accomplishments like the EPA, the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act.
Nixon and Paul have a few things in common. Both are graduates of Duke University: Nixon in law and Paul in Medicine.
Both men hold dear their version of what the Republican party was and what it’s become.
The Party of Lincoln, but was Lincoln a Republican in name only: a RINO?
If Lincoln was alive today would he be welcomed by the new Republican party? Old guard Republicans think not and they want to change that. They want to bring back the old guard. A guard closer to the center politically and willing to compromise for the good of the Nation, not the Party.
Enter Chris Christie to the scene.
Today, Chris Christie (R- NJ) signed a bill banning a so called gay conversion therapy. A therapy that tries to change a persons sexual orientation from gay to heterosexual.
Is this the move from far right to center that some Republicans long to have? And, should Democrats be worried that the Republican wave is coming like a gathering storm.
Christie is polling well with Republicans. He’s also polling well with Independents. Some talking heads think he has the mojo to over take Hilary in 2016.
Maybe what’s more important is that Christie is polling well with blue dog Democrats. Democrats who are conservative by nature and vote for Democrats that have that flavor.
Democrats like Kay Hagan from North Carolina. Long gone are the days and ideology of the Jesse Helms crowd. Maybe?
Tea Party Republicans in North Carolina are hoping not. They are hoping a far right true conservative can take her on and win.
What it all comes down to is can Democrats get off their butts, mobilize and take back North Carolina? Maybe. Maybe not.
So, if Chris Christie, the Republican from New Jersey who “gets along” with Democrat Barack Obama has a chance of winning the White House in 2016. It may very well be the best thing that ever happened to Senator Kay Hagan in 2014. She needs more blue dog Dems.
But, she—like it or not—will have to take the bull by the horns in 2014. And, she may very well win.
My prediction: If Kay Hagan wins North Carolina in 2014; Chris Christie will win North Carolina in 2016. And, he’ll most like decorate the West Wing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
