I’m a little sick of talking about Bernie Sanders’ porn

BernieFor a few days, it was rather amusing to read of Bernie’s misstep and it was fun watch him wiggle around explaining what he was trying to say.

But, at the end of all the conversations, I’m still reminded of what my mother use to say and I think it fits Bernie quite well: “he’s a damn nut!”

Fact #1: I’ve heard Bernie speak on more than one occasion and he’s not a Democrat. At a church in Raleigh, North Carolina, Sanders answered a question about party affiliation. His answer: “...I’m proud to say I’m a Socialist Democrat.”

Bernie may speak to the progressive ideology of Democratic thinking on some issues – but that doesn’t make him a Democrat.

As Sanders explained in a 2006 interview with Democracy Now!:

“I think [democratic socialism] means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship all of our people have healthcare; that as a right, all of our kids, regardless of income, have quality childcare, are able to go to college without going deeply into debt; that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big money interest. I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly. That’s all it means.

But the Vermont senator himself is loose with his terminology, as he has praised the “long social-democratic tradition” of Nordic countries as examples of how the United States should operate as a nation. For instance, points to Finland’s universal healthcare, free childcare, parental leave benefits, free higher education, low income inequality, and overwhelming unionization of workers. And sometimes he does indeed refer to himself, simply, as “a socialist.”

Fact #2: Bernie flip-flops. Like all politicians, Bernie Sanders changes his mind. I’m not going into a long diatribe on how or why – but after almost 45 years in politics, a Google search can tell you the man has some problems.

Fact #3: This snippet from Thor Benson (a LA writer) sums up what a lot of people are saying about Bernie:

“America is partly a social democracy already, of course, thanks to programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, unemployment insurance, and food stamps. Sanders doesn’t want the government to run the entire economy, but he does want the government to ensure that the economy doesn’t regularly ruin millions of people’s lives.”

Bernie points to Denmark, Finland, Sweden and other similar countries as role models. But, it’s a lot easier to manage things like free healthcare, free education and the like when the population is under 20 million people. The last time I looked, there weren’t tens of thousands of people crossing the border to get into those countries either.

Does, Bernie have some good ideas? Yes, he does. But, is he a Democrat? No – in my mind he’s not. And some of his good ideas just aren’t feasible in our society.  And, paying for them is out of reach when so many people are struggling to make ends meet.

The TTDR (too long didn’t read) version of Bernie Sanders: if Bernie had his way, we’d all be running around naked living in communes dreaming about Freudian tunnels and trains. But, as nice as that sounds to the “enlightened” among us – somebody’s got to pay for it.

I’ll be glad when we get back to talking about real issues like IRS loopholes for the super rich, outsourcing of jobs, TPP, Wall Street too big to fail mentalities and a meaningful dialog on sustainable energy.

I know Sanders is talking about those things – as well as others – but Bernie needs to sit this election out.

  1. Rene Trevino says:

George, you are full of crap. Bernie Sanders is a welcomed breath of fresh air in our current rich people’s democracy. Like it or not, there is a revolution underway. Revolution, meaning change not violence. I hope your rich bosses are up for the challenge, Georgie.

  2. Jeff Momo says:

This opinion piece sounds like the same propaganda we have been fed for the last 40 years.
    Time to end the brainwashing.
